Typically, if any athlete was awake at 3:30am, they are up to no good. This past Saturday was an exception. The XC squads had a 3:30am wake up, and a 4:30am bus to travel to Grand Junction to face the best of the west. The Anna Banana 5K, hosted at Connected Lakes State Park, has developed a recent reputation of gather the finest of the West Slope on the fastest course in the western half of the state. Middle Park XC made the trip for the first time and found all expectations to be true.
Nearly every Middle Park runner obtained a PR (personal record), even though the heat of the day struck the girls race. High-point of the outing was the boys squad, who for the first time, had all 5 Varsity scorers sub-20 minutes. The 1-2 combo of Scholl and Simmons were the best 1-2 in the entire boys field, which has been the case in every race they have entered together, with the lone exception of Lyons. They combined for 7 points, with a 3rd (Scholl) and 4th Simmons. Other scorers were Mark Knight, Brevik Petersen, and Corbin Frick.
The lady Panthers were running hard in the heat of the West and showed for a PR day. Alyssa Petersen nearly broke 22:00 and Raelee Granger was not far back. Senior Lauren Berg had a gutsy first-fast race and proved to have more speed than most rookie seniors.
Both squads travel to Denver and Salida next week for invites. Then League.
