January 17, 2017
Dear Junior Parents/Guardians:
As you know, last January, the Colorado Department of Education adopted the redesigned SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) as the state college exam to begin year 2017. Since that time we have been communicating to students about this change. We are offering a voluntary SAT Prep class Friday mornings beginning February 3 - February 24 here at MPHS. Students are encouraged to attend all 4 sessions for best results. On March 9th, there will be a mandatory SAT prep day from 8:05-2:20. Students will be taking and scoring a practice test and will receive valuable information on how to be most successful on the SAT. All Juniors will return to classes for periods 8-9. The SAT will be administered on April 11th from 8:05-12:30. The makeup test will be Tuesday April 25th.
The State SAT is free of cost and your student will be automatically registered for the exam. We do recommend that your student create an account with The College Board at: www.collegeboard.com to access numerous free resources and practice tests for the SAT. Your student will also be able to register for the optional essay, which is also free of charge. We recommend the optional essay only for students applying to schools that require a college entrance exam with an essay. Students cannot take the SAT with Essay unless they register themselves on the College Board site. A comprehensive list of schools requiring essays will be provided by the College Board on their website.
Next week I will be talking with all Juniors in their English classes about the SAT and the process of registering for the essay portion.
